Recently, my family and I moved into a new home, leaving behind the house we lived in for twenty-three years. Needless to say it was a HUGE move with weeks of packing and unpacking, and there's still things that have to get done!
Here are some tips for packing up your room or apartment, based on what worked best for me.
1. Start With Decor
Start by packing up and sorting through items like pictures on your wall, pillows, furniture, lights, etc. Getting all of that out of the way is a huge help before you start digging into your clothes.
2. Be Strict With What You Keep
The best thing you can do to help yourself is be liberal with what you give away or toss. If you haven't worn something in two seasons, chances are you aren't going to miss it. I am constantly making piles of clothes and shoes that I want to give to another family member or sell. It makes room for new items and keeps you from getting disorganized or hoarding.
3. Black Garbage Bags Are Your Best friend

Instead of taking every piece of clothing off of its hanger and folding it up, purchase a roll of black garbage bags. Take 8-10 hangers at once, depending on how heavy your clothing is, pierce a hole in the bag with the hanger, and knot it at the bottom. It's my favorite way to pack up clothing because once you move, you can hang everything back up in seconds.
4. Invest In Bins
Purchase some clear bins or containers from places like Amazon, Michael's, The Container Store, or Target. You can fill them with anything you want, and the best part is they're clear so you can see everything that's inside.
5. Find A Organization or Charity to Donate
Donating your unwanted items to an organization that helps the less fortunate is an awesome way to spread the love. You'll also be more likely to get rid of unnecessary items when you know they're headed towards a great cause.
